NHS.UK and Wagtail CMS: Planning for the future

In late 2025 we hosted the NHS.UK team at our Bristol office to discuss the future of their Wagtail CMS platform.

A proven platform

NHS.UK runs on Wagtail CMS and is one of the world's most-visited health websites. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the platform served over a billion page views in a single year, demonstrating Wagtail's capability at scale.

NHS.UK is also one of the most important websites in the UK - not only does it provide clinically assured, accessible health advice and guidance to millions of people, but thousands of other sites and services rely on this content as their trusted source.

The platform has been running on Wagtail since 2017. As with any mature platform, there comes a time to review what's working well and explore what's possible with newer CMS developments.

Working together

Our partnership with the NHS team began in 2018 when we first hosted their team for a Wagtail sprint on review workflows and content import/export. We've been their SEO partner for eight consecutive years, helping them navigate the evolving search landscape.

The recent meetup brought together developers, content managers, user researchers and product leads from NHS England with our team including Thibaud, Ellie and Jess. We explored Wagtail's latest features and discussed how the platform could continue to support NHS.UK's content strategy - shout out to Thibaud for making hours of demos and discussions engaging and productive.

What we covered

We demonstrated new features in recent Wagtail releases and shared examples of how other organisations are using the CMS to address similar challenges. The NHS team brought their expertise in clinical content requirements, while we shared knowledge of Wagtail's capabilities and future roadmap.

The discussion identified opportunities for improving workflows and content delivery, from platform health checks to potential feature upgrades that could benefit the wider Wagtail community.

It was an energising day to come to Bristol to see the possibilities for this CMS. The team really understands what we're trying to achieve.

Looking ahead

The meeting confirmed Wagtail currently remains the right platform for NHS.UK's needs, with clear opportunities for future development.
