A new intranet for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust

2 mins read

We’re incredibly proud to be partnering with Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust to deliver a new intranet that will connect more than 23,000 staff across five hospitals and 23 community services.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ has chosen Torchbox Public, our specialist public sector team, to design and deliver a unified, accessible, and user-friendly intranet that simplifies internal communication and helps staff deliver the compassionate, high-quality care the Trust is known for.

This project builds on our long-standing experience designing digital platforms for NHS organisations and marks a major step forward in how open-source technology can support collaboration across large, complex healthcare systems.

As someone who’s worked with NHS teams for years, I’ve seen how the right digital platform can break down barriers, improve workflows, and ultimately contribute to better patient care. That’s exactly what we’re setting out to achieve here.

Creating a single digital home for Trust staff

Currently, Guy’s and St Thomas’ has two separate intranet platforms. The new intranet will create a single, consistent experience across the entire organisation, making it easier for staff to find the information they need, connect with each other, and feel part of one team with shared values.

We’re a diverse and welcoming organisation, which is incredibly proud of our staff and the dedication they show to our patients and each other. We’re creating this new intranet to make it easier for everyone to connect and access the information they need to deliver the high-quality and compassionate care we are known for.

Built on Wagtail NHS Intranet

The new intranet will be built using Wagtail NHS Intranet, an open-source platform we created in collaboration with NHS partners.

It was originally developed with Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and continues to evolve through collaborations with other trusts including Gloucestershire NHS.

The platform is designed to meet the specific needs of NHS teams and eliminates ongoing licence fees, while prioritising accessibility, usability, and flexibility.

What to expect from the new intranet

The new platform will support more than 23,000 employees and deliver:

  • Easy access for all staff
A consistent, mobile-friendly experience across locations and devices.
  • User-friendly design
Intuitive navigation and improved content discovery to support staff in their daily work.
  • A unifying platform
A central space for staff to connect with each other and with leadership to enhance communication, transparency, and culture across the Trust.

What’s next

The project is already underway, beginning with a discovery and design phase. Development and rollout will follow a phased approach, driven by user research and shaped by staff voices.

As part of this research, we’re piloting AI-powered interviews to help the Trust reach more staff, especially those whose roles or shift patterns make traditional interviews difficult. This approach allows for more inclusive, scalable qualitative research without losing the human element.

In our recent webinar, Cassie and Madhav - alongside Emma Halahan (Guy’s and St Thomas’s Product Manager for Digital Communications) - share what we’ve learned from our tests and what it could mean for the future of large-scale research. Catch up on the recording below.
