Let's co-fund your charity's next AI innovation project
Through the Torchbox Employee Ownership Trust Innovation Fund, we match-fund AI proofs-of-concept with charities that want to explore how AI could help them reach more people, work smarter, or create greater impact.
We'll invest up to £15,000 per project, because we believe charities should lead the way in shaping what responsible, meaningful AI looks like.
If you've been wondering whether AI could help address a challenge in your organisation, we'd love to explore that question with you.
Why we're investing in AI for good
AI isn't just about making things faster or more efficient. It's about exploring new ways to deliver services, connect with supporters, and create value for the communities you serve.
As an employee-owned B Corp, we've always believed in using our expertise to support organisations doing important work. Through our Trust Innovation Fund, we can now go further by investing directly in charity partnerships that explore how AI can open new possibilities.
We're not interested in AI for AI's sake. We want to work with charities on ideas that could genuinely transform how they operate, ideas with the potential to deliver significant returns on investment and meaningful improvements for the people they serve.
Some example projects for inspiration
Breast Cancer Now: Extending human compassion with AI triage
Breast Cancer Now receives up to 2,800 supporter messages per week, but can only respond to about 8% due to limited resources. We developed an AI triage proof of concept that explores how AI could help route, draft, and learn responsibly, with human experts kept firmly in the loop.
The prototype demonstrates the potential to increase response coverage from 8% to near-total, reduce turnaround times from days to hours, and deliver an estimated 80.6% first-year ROI.
It shows how AI can extend human compassion, not replace it, ensuring every message gets the care it deserves. We're now working together to build the case for full funding and rollout.

RNIB: Making knowledge instantly accessible
RNIB's helpline staff struggled to quickly access accurate information while supporting blind and partially sighted callers, often needing to transfer people between teams. We developed ChatRNIB, an AI-powered chat system built on their Wagtail CMS, that helps staff find answers instantly.
The tool has revolutionised service delivery by democratising information across teams, reducing handovers, and improving response times. ChatRNIB is now empowering users directly, supporting self-service access to trusted information and advice.

The best applications share some common characteristics
Clear impact potential: Your idea should help you reach more people, raise more money, or work more efficiently in ways that make a real difference to your mission. We're interested in ideas that could start small but lead to meaningful change.
Room for AI to learn: The most successful AI applications use data, feedback, or user interactions to become more effective over time. Think about whether your idea could adapt and improve as it's used.
Real benefits for people: Whether it's better experiences for your supporters or smoother processes for your team, the idea should make things genuinely better for people.
Leadership backing: Responsible innovation needs permission and protection. You'll need support from leadership and space to experiment, even if the outcome isn't guaranteed.
Data readiness: Good data makes AI useful, trustworthy, and easier to test responsibly. You'll need access to data that's accurate, ethical, and safe to use.
Capacity to engage: Collaboration and curiosity are key to success. Is there capacity and enthusiasm in your organisation to shape and test a prototype with us?
Understanding of potential value: We focus our efforts on truly transformative ideas - the ones with the greatest potential to deliver significant multiples of ROI. You don't need all the answers yet, but you should have a sense of why this matters.
How the process works
- Share your opportunity
Tell us where you see potential: a challenge to solve, a process to improve, or a new way to reach people.
2. Explore together
We'll look at feasibility, data readiness, and scope, shaping a plan to test your opportunity safely and effectively.
3. Prototype
We'll invest together to design and build a small-scale proof of concept that shows what's possible.
4. Learn and scale
If it works, we'll help you build the case for funding, adoption, or wider rollout.
Ready to explore your idea?
Our readiness check takes only a few minutes and will help you understand whether your idea is ready for co-funding.
