We’ve always tried to be transparent about sustainability and our impact at Torchbox. We publish our yearly Impact Reports, share information about our website’s digital emissions and make our Sustainability Policy available for everyone to see. Now, we’re going a step further by adding a carbon.txt file to torchbox.com - a simple way to make that information easier to find.

What is carbon.txt?

Carbon.txt is an emerging open standard from the Green Web Foundation. It provides a simple, machine-readable way for organisations to share sustainability information about their websites - things like emissions data, sustainability reports and website-related services.

Some organisations already publish this information, but it can be tricky to find as it’s scattered across reports and web pages. A carbon.txt file provides a single place to make that data and information easily accessible.

Learn more about the standard at thegreenwebfoundation.org/tools/carbon-txt.

Why we’re adopting it

There are three main reasons:

1. To make our sustainability data easier to find

A carbon.txt file will make it possible for automated tools, partners, clients - anyone, to discover our sustainability data easily.

2. To lead by example

As a digital agency and B Corp we want to demonstrate what responsible digital practice looks like in action. New standards rely on participation, so we’re adding our voice early.

3. To support a more transparent, sustainable internet

A more sustainable web depends on open, standardised access to sustainability information. By making this data discoverable through carbon.txt, we’re helping to build the foundations for greater transparency and accountability across the digital sector.

What our carbon.txt includes

Our file lists:

  • Links to our sustainability policy, annual impact reports, digital emissions and methodologies.
  • Details of the technology and infrastructure behind how the site is hosted and delivered.

It’s open and human-readable at torchbox.com/carbon.txt, and it will evolve over time as the standard matures.

What’s next

Going forward, we hope to:

  • Help our clients add a carbon.txt file to their own websites
  • Integrate it into all new projects
  • Contribute feedback and improvements back to the standard

A small step towards a more sustainable web

Adding a carbon.txt file might feel like a small step, but it’s part of a bigger shift toward a more transparent and sustainable web. As more organisations adopt open, connected ways of sharing sustainability data, we’ll move closer to a web that’s not only accessible and ethical, but sustainable too.
