brightonSEO 2022 - The intersection between SEO and accessibility

1 min read

I am thrilled to be speaking at brightonSEO 2022. I have been invited to speak about how SEO and accessibility intersect and I’ll be drawing on my experience working with RNIB, one of the UK’s leading sight loss charities and the largest community of blind and partially sighted people.

Digital accessibility is about making sure that your website is easy for everyone to use, including the 1 in 5 people in the UK who experience disability. Similarly, SEO is about making sure search engines can navigate your site easily and understand your content, as search engines determine which content is most relevant to users. Therefore, often when we talk about accessibility and SEO, we’re talking about the same concepts.

There are however some divergences between what SEOs and accessibility experts consider to be best practice for elements such as internal linking, alt text and page titles. I’m going to be discussing the similarities and the differences between these elements and what the MLP (minimum loveable product) looks like, so we can satisfy the SEO sticklers in the room whilst being empathetic to accessibility needs and requirements.
