At Torchbox, we've started to invite interesting people to join us for lunch on Friday. They get a free meal in exchange for a short talk about what they do — everyone's happy!

Last Friday we were treated to a talk by Niko Brian, a sound engineer/sound recordist/sound designer and composer from Oxford. He was recommended to us as someone who could help with sound design on an animation project we were working on.

Niko's talk was about his Record and Ride project, which saw him undertaking a 5-month cycling tour of Europe; recording local musicians as he went. Almost all of his accommodation on the trip was provided by the generous musicians and friends he met on his travels.

He started out with a very loose plan of what he wanted to achieve but ended up travelling to France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy (Bari), Greece and Israel. The musicians that he recorded would hook him up with musicians in other countries and that would become the next destination on his tour. Over the five months, he recorded in some pretty amazing places, including a sewer and an abandoned cold-war Radome in Berlin.

It was great to hear about Niko's adventure and about the serendipity you're exposed to by putting yourself out of your comfort zone.

Find out more about the trip and listen to some of the recordings he made at his website: record-and-ride.com
