Blood Cancer UK: New name, new Wagtail website

2 mins read

A new name, brand and website. It’s been a busy year for the UK’s leading blood cancer charity.

Blood Cancer UK, the charity which funds vital life-saving research into all types of blood cancer and provides information and support to those affected and their families, has transformed its public image.

In April 2020, the charity changed its name from Bloodwise to Blood Cancer UK - a move to improve communications and reach more people affected by blood cancer. Read more in this article from Gemma Peters, the charity's CEO. They’ve launched with a new brand by Pentagram.

A new website for a new future

We partnered with Blood Cancer UK to deliver and shape their ambitious new digital strategy.

First up, a new flagship website that brings the new brand to life online. The new website makes it easy for people affected by blood cancer to get information and support and to present the charity’s work in an inspiring way, demonstrating the difference their research makes. It also makes it quick and easy for people to get involved with fundraising events and make donations.

We designed and built the new site and managed the migration from Drupal, ensuring no SEO equity was lost during the replatform (a major risk when an organisation changes name). The same team also provides SEO consultancy to the NHS for NHS.uk - a site that’s been getting +75m unique visitors per month during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Blood Cancer UK's new website

The new website is powered by Wagtail, the open source CMS used by the NHS, Google, NASA, Oxfam, Samaritans and thousands of organisations around the world. This gives Blood Cancer UK a flexible and powerful foundation upon which new features and services can be added over time.

All of us at Blood Cancer UK are hugely proud of what we have achieved with the website. The response from staff and our supporters has been incredible. The Torchbox team has done a fantastic job and we’ve been really impressed by the quality of their work.

This is only the beginning

In the next phase, we will make improvements to key supporter journeys with a new integrated Wagtail-powered donations and events platform.
